For residents of Illinois interested in participating in the cherished tradition of spring wild turkey hunting, navigating the application process is a crucial step. The Illinois Resident Spring Wild Turkey Hunting Permit Application serves as a comprehensive guide for both seasoned hunters and newcomers. The application form delineates several critical timelines, with three distinct lottery periods allowing hunters to submit their applications within specified dates. It emphasizes the limitation on the number of applications per period, the opportunity for group hunts, and the requirement for applicants to choose preferred hunting locations and seasons. Moreover, the form facilitates group applications exclusively during the first two lotteries, ensuring a collaborative hunting experience. Applicants are encouraged to carefully select their desired county or Special Hunt Area (SHA) alongside the season they wish to hunt, providing flexibility and accommodating individual preferences. Beyond location and timing details, the application stresses the importance of compliance with state regulations, including verification of state residency and assurance of no delinquency on child support or suspension of hunting privileges. The form also outlines the fee structure, promising applicants that payment is only required upon successful permit issuance, and invites applicants to opt for the convenience of online submission. This procedural framework is designed to preserve the integrity of wild turkey populations in Illinois while offering an equitable and enjoyable hunting opportunity for state residents.

The application process includes multiple lottery periods with specific dates, requiring applicants to select their hunt location choices, season, and provide personal identification details.

  2. What are the deadlines for the lottery application periods?

There are three distinct lottery application periods for the Illinois Resident Spring Wild Turkey Hunting Permit. Lottery 1 spans from 10/05/2021 to 12/01/2021, Lottery 2 from 12/12/2021 to 01/11/2022, and Lottery 3 from 01/22/2022 to 02/09/2022. It's crucial that applications are submitted within these time frames as late applications will be considered for the next application period.

  3. Can I apply for a permit as part of a group hunt?

Yes, applicants have the option to apply for permits as part of a group hunt during Lottery 1, Lottery 2, and Lottery 3, with a limit of up to 3 applications. However, it's important to note that group hunt applications are not accepted in Lottery 3. Each group must designate a group leader and include their information in the specified section of the application form.

  4. Are there any restrictions on how many permits I can receive?

Yes, individual hunters or recipients of Landowner (POH) Spring Turkey permits are subject to limitations on the number of permits they can hold. Specifically, they may not exceed a total of 3 permits for the Spring Turkey hunting season and are not eligible to apply in Lottery 1 if they are recipients of a POH Spring Turkey permit.

  5. What is the cost of the permit if I am successfully drawn in the lottery?

The fee for an Illinois Resident Spring Wild Turkey Permit is $19. This amount, which includes any associated fees, will only be charged to the applicant's account if they are successfully issued a permit upon the completion of the lottery drawing.

  6. How is preference given in the lottery drawing process?

Preference in the first computerized drawing for a Spring Wild Turkey permit is given based on specific criteria. Applicants must use the official agency application form, be residents of the State of Illinois, eligible to receive a permit, and not have had their turkey hunting privileges revoked. Additionally, they must apply for the same county and season choices as those listed in their application from the previous year.

  7. Can I use my permit in any county or special hunt area (SHA)?

No, the permits are specific to the county or SHA and season as indicated on the issued document. County permits are not valid for SHAs listed in the application, and vice versa. It's essential for applicants to clearly indicate their preferred hunting locations and seasons on the application form to ensure their permit aligns with their hunting plans.

Common mistakes

  1. One common mistake is selecting more than one box under the application type section. It is essential to choose only one option to indicate whether you're applying for Lottery 1, 2, or 3, based on the application period and the specific limitations of each.

  2. Applicants often miss the deadline for their intended lottery period. Each lottery has a set period for submission, and missing these windows will result in the application being moved to the next available lottery period.

  3. Another frequent error is incorrectly filling out the hunt location choices. Applicants must specify their preferred counties or Special Hunt Areas (SHAs) and the corresponding season in the correct order of preference.

  4. For group hunting applications, a common oversight is not including the group leader's IDNR Customer Number. This is required, and failure to provide it could invalidate the group application.

  5. Submitting an application without a mandatory signature or failing to certify the statements regarding state residency and child support order delinquency results in an incomplete application process.

  6. Some forget to include both their Social Security Number and their IDNR Customer Number. Both numbers are necessary for the application to be processed.

  7. A crucial but often overlooked detail is the requirement to mail an unfilled voided check with the application if not applying online. This is essential for the payment process should the application be successful.

  8. Incorrect county or SHA abbreviation usage also leads to application errors. Applicants should carefully refer to the list provided in the application instructions to ensure accuracy.

  9. Lastly, a mistake some make is overlooking the preference system conditions, such as applying for the same county and season as the previous year to gain the preference in the first computerized drawing.

Misconceptions

When it comes to applying for a turkey hunting permit in Illinois, several misconceptions can lead to confusion and errors in the application process. Here are six common misunderstandings about the Illinois Turkey Permit Application form that deserve clarification:

  • Misconception 1: You can apply for a permit at any time before the season starts.

Each lottery has a strict application period, and applications received after a deadline are moved to the next period, not processed immediately.

  • Misconception 2: You can submit multiple applications in the first lottery to increase your chances.

Applicants are limited to one application per lottery period, with additional opportunities in subsequent lotteries under specific conditions, such as group hunts.

  • Misconception 3: Landowners have no restrictions when applying.

Landowner (POH) applicants/recipients are ineligible to apply in Lottery 1, indicating that even property owners face limitations in the application process.

  • Misconception 4: A permit can be transferred to someone else if you cannot hunt.

Permits are strictly non-transferable. Selling, giving away, or changing the designated hunter on a permit is not permitted.

  • Misconception 5: Your chosen county or special hunt area (SHA) does not significantly impact your application.

Your selection is crucial as permits are valid only for the season and location indicated. Changing your mind after receiving a permit is not an option.

  • Misconception 6: Applying online is optional, and mail applications are processed at the same speed.

While you can apply via mail, online applications at EXPLOREMOREIL.COM are more efficient and may be processed faster, reducing the risk of missing deadlines.
